Summer, Summer, Summertime....

I'm a red wine girl.... I like a nice glass of red wine on a chilly evening.

Problem is.... it's July -- and although the humidity has finally broken here in CT, it's still in the mid-80s. I'm not complaining -- believe me, I'm not complaining -- but..... a glass of rich red wine that warms your insides just doesn't call to me this time of year -- so what does that leave? white wine. I know nothing about white wine.

We have some friends coming for a visit this weekend and so, I asked the Big Dubya to pick me up a bottle of wine. He asked what I wanted..... and I struggled.... I just honestly don't know.

I hemmed and hawed and came up with pinot grigio.... I wanted light and sweet -- something cold that that I could sip leisurely.....

Anyone want to suggest a good white?

I'm not sure if you'll be able to find a lot in CT but the NY finger lakes region makes great Riesling. Especially Dr. Konstantin Frank if you can find that. Their Chateau Frank Celebre is really, really good too if you like a sparkling wine.

I prefer Sauvignon Blanc in the summer. It works great with summery foods like salads and seafood and I find there's more flavor to it than a Pinot Grigio which, to me, is too watery tasting. Almost anything from Marlborough (New Zealand) is good.

i'm going to spell this terribly but it is a lightly sweet german white called gevertshtemeaner. I totally spelled that phonetically. everyone we have ever introduced to it has loved it.

I'm a huge fan of Honig Sauvignon Blanc. It isn't cheap, but it is light and lovely.

I also like South African Sav. Blancs.

I like the Naia Verdejo wines a lot. Just had a bottle at Bespoke in New Haven over the weekend.

That same dinner, we also had a bottle of A to Z Pinot Gris out of Oregon that was also very pleasant.

I am also a fan of German Riesling (recently has a good Dr. Loosen). We do have a bottle of Dr. Frank's down in the cellar, but I haven't tried it yet.

There are some great summer whites that are pretty inexpensive - Ecco Domani Pinot Grigio is quite nice - and better price than Santa Margharetia(sp) The Barefoot group is always fun for evening glass and MY favorite that has a wee bit of sparkle is called Obsession. It is from Ironstone Winery -

I already loved it and then the somalier at the restaurant I love suggested it with a dish one night too!!~

McWilliams Chardonnay...it's australian, the 2004 is awesome (we've drunk about six bottles and I keep meaning to post about it).

Pinot Grigio is lighter, if you're looking for something in that direction as well...

We're hardcore red wine types, too, but we've found our summertime savior in Ferrari-Carano Fumé Blanc. Fruity, vibrant, a little (but not too) sweet... a very nice accompaniment to anything other than steak you might throw on the grill.

Plus, my local Trader Joes carries it for $16.99/bottle. Faaaaantastic.

That funny - we just opened a bottle of Ferrari-Carano Fumé Blanc the other day.

Like you said, sweet, but very nice on a summer night...

L'Ecole No. 41 Chenin Blanc. They used to call it Walla Voila. Not sure if they do that anymore. I can't get it easily where I live (Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board, I loathe you) so it's been a while, but I think about it all summer. And I don't like white wine very much.

I'd say try a lovely Alsace wine (riesling or gerwertz), a nice chablis, or as Chicky said a good marlbourough Sauv Blanc.

I also think roses are nice in the summer - specially in the early evening as its starting to cool. Marques does a gorgeous one as does a little Canadian company (no idea if you get get it where you are) but the winery is called Therapy and the wine is called Pink Freud.
